Have you heard of the Cronut yet? This sugary sweetness is the invention of Dominique Ansel from Dominique Ansel Bakery in SOHO — and it’s become the talk of the town since it’s release on May 10th. Everyday at Dominique Ansel Bakery, there will be a line out the door (some come as early as 5:00 a.m.) for customers who want to satisfy their sweet cravings. What is the cronut exactly? It’s a cross between a croissant and a donut. Take light flaky layers of croissant dough, then fry it up (yes, just like a doughnut) and finish it off with sugar and cream and a sprinkle of angel dust. Because of their popularity (and scalpers buying them and then selling them on Craigslist for $40+), customers are limited to 2 Cronuts each. Every day chef makes 200 and by 9:00 a.m., they are sold out.
Since these are only available in New York, dessert lovers around the world keep asking — “How can I get my hands on one?” Well, Cronut lovers the problem has been solved, as both Red The Steakhouse locations (Miami Beach and Boca Raton) have created their own version of the Cronut. The moment we heard this, we made our reservation for the Boca location to finally try – The Cronut.
And taste we did .. thanks to Red The Steakhouse‘s talented pastry chef Heather Jesus .. and licked our plates clean. For Chef Heather’s version of the Cronut, she starts off with a basic recipe for a croissant, layers it, adds butter, cuts the dough into a doughnut shape — and in the end fries it up and presents a finished Cronut (or 3) — the new craze in the pastry world. An order of Cronuts at Red, The Steakhouse’s Boca location, includes 3 Cronuts — a chocolate Cronut with chocolate cream, glaze and pearls on the top; a Lemon Cronut with lemon cream; and a raspberry Cronut filled with vanilla bean pastry cream and sprinkled with raspberry sugar.
Since there are Cronut imposters around the country, we think that this could make for a very cool road trip. How about it?
