Weekends — the perfect time to escape and discover great food. A trip to Naples to raid the aisles at Trader Joe’s, Tampa for a night out at Bern’s Steak House, and for those times when you need a taste of the exotic where rich culinary traditions, sun-drenched beaches and plates of mofongo dominate — a trip to Puerto Rico is in order — and, you can get there in less than 3 hours by plane from South Florida, making it a perfect weekend getaway.
While you’re there, immerse yourself in the rich culture and history (a trip to Old San Juan, a night out salsa dancing and sampling your way through the ever-famous Puerto Rican rums) — and for those seeking a culinary awakening, an exploration of the dining scene will keep your palate dancing in delight. While we expected to find traditional flavors of the isle of enchantment dominating the menus, we found that we had to seek tradition out — but were pleasantly surprised with Puerto Rican influences in the modern dishes.
Getting There
Getting to San Juan is easier than you think with over two dozen daily nonstop flights from South Florida. Flights, on average, will set you back less than $200.
Where to Stay
Puerto Rico offers something for everyone, so we have recommendations for every preference.
El Conquistador (1000 El Conquistador Avenue, Fajardo 00738, Puerto Rico; 787.863.1000)
Perfect for a family getaway or a romantic retreat where you can find everything in one setting, El Conquistador will fulfill your needs — and you’ll never have to leave the resort if that’s what you desire. During the day, spoil yourself silly at the Golden Door Spa; take a dip in the Infinity pool; face your fears on the Speed Slide at the Coqui Water Park; test your skills on the Arthur Hills Golf Course; or plan a day trip to Palomino Island. When the sun goes down, the energy rises and it’s time to relax and feed your senses to the culinary delights at one of the 23 restaurants, bars and lounges located on the property. Our favorite was Strip House restaurant — and while we know it’s a chain, we were pleasantly surprised and couldn’t resist the Black Pepper Crusted Tenderloin with Mofongo and Roasted Shallots.
From now until December 31, 2012, El Conquistador is running a “Dine Around Our World” promotion. With this promotion, guests will receive an incentive card — and as guests dine at the fine dining restaurants at the property (and spend a minimum of $150 at each of them), they will have their incentive cards stamped. When they receive 4 stamps, guests will receive a $100 resort credit and if they fulfill their passport, guests will receive a complimentary one-day all inclusive package for their next stay at El Conquistador.
